Our first Sunday in San Diego I went to visit my old home ward. I don't think I've been back for about 20 years. I almost expected Al and Francis Clark to be there in their jet-black dyed hair to greet me. There were old when I was a kid, so they've been gone for a long time. I thought their job was to guard the door. I was told that they would only let me go out once during church. I was just as pleased to see some parents of kids that I grew up with, now older themselves, taking the place of the Clarks. Grossmont ward was a great place to grow up. Back before ward building funds (and building codes???),the ward members built much of that building. I remember going down and sanding the benches and doing jobs to buy a brick - $1.00. It bonded our ward like no other I've seen. It seemed strange to me that the inside was no longer green, bright green!

My kids got to go to Primary in my old (back then Jr. Sunday School) room. Clear memories of having the sacrament in there during Sunday School and being picked to hold the "velvet rose" when learning Heavenly Father Loves Me. This time it was Caleb's birthday and his turn to be up in front. Memories of our Always the Best in the Stake Roadshows as I peeked into the cultural hall. After church we drove by the 2 houses that I lived in growing up in that ward. I was hoping the people inside (that I could see walking around) wouldn't think I was weird, but secretly hoping they'd come out and ask me to take a tour. (Is the one kitchen still orange and brown?) Lots more memories...too many... flooded me as I stood there with my kids.

Both homes looked nice, especially the older one - in fact, it looked better. But my mom's ferns from the 1970's in the brick planter (now HUGE) and her roses at the other home are still there, and that makes me happy.
